Student Admission
1. Number of Admitted Students
Number of Admitted Students to the Master’s Program (A maximum of 4 students)
Number of Admitted Students to the Doctoral Program (A maximum of 3 students)
2. Eligibility
1) Eligibility for the Master’s Program
There are no restrictions to the applicants’ undergraduate major but admitted students must complete the “undergraduate courses” specified in Paragraph 3-2-1 (a) of the Regulation for Course Completion for the Master's Program.
* Restricted Departments for Completing the Teaching Profession Courses: Department of Design (and Crafts) → Art education certificates cannot be issued to design majors, as it is not a related major (fine art) and a specialized field.
2) Eligibility for the Doctoral Program
Application is open to graduates and prospective graduates of master’s programs in Korea and international graduate schools with similar curricula to this program. If the applicant earned a master’s degree in fine arts, they must satisfy the “required courses” and “specific major courses” requirements specified in the Regulation for Course Completion for the Master's Program.
3. Admission Periods and Methods
Students can be admitted two times every year.
1) First-term Admission
The first-term admission is conducted during the period set by the university (generally from October to November), and students are selected based on a paper-based examination, review of applications, oral examination, and interviews. The oral examination for the master’s program consists of questions on what the applicant learned as undergraduates (teaching profession courses or courses on art theory). The oral examination for the doctoral program focuses on the applicant’s master’s degree. Applicants must submit the required documents specified during admission by the set deadline and attend the oral examination and interview. The English test will be replaced by submitting the applicant’s TEPS score report by the due date.
2) Second-Term Admission
The second-term admission is conducted during the period set by the university (generally in May). The admissions process is identical to the first-term admission.
Regulations for Course Completion
1. Master’s Program
A. Complementing Undergraduate Courses
Students who have majored in fine art, humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences must complete at least two undergraduate courses in the teaching profession or art theory within the first two semesters after entering the master’s program. Students can be partially exempted from the courses only in exceptional circumstances, with the approval of their advisor and the head of the program.
B. Required Courses
1) One course on art education
2) One course from the major courses in education
3) One course on either the history of Korean art or the history of Eastern art
4) One course on the history of Western art
C. Specific Major Courses
1) After entering the master’s program, students must have discussions with their advisor and the head of the program to choose a specific major before the second semester.
2) The specific major is a field related to the student’s master’s thesis, which can include fields such as “art subject education,” “art theory education,” and “public art education.”
3) Once the student chooses their specific major, they must take at least three courses from departments related to their specific major through discussions with their advisor and the head of the program. (Students may take courses related to their specific major outside the Program in Art Education with the approval of their advisor and the head of the program. However, the master’s and doctoral students must receive course guidance from their advisor prior to the course registration.)
D. Graduate Thesis Research Courses
Students must earn three credits from the Graduate Thesis Research Course before completing their coursework for their master’s degree. The credits will not be included in the required credits for graduation.
E. Other Courses
The advisor and the head of the program can allow students to take the required courses to expand their basic knowledge and prepare for their thesis, regardless of the number of credits (24 credits) required for graduation.
2. Doctoral Program
A. Art Subject Education
1) Students who have not completed the coursework for the master’s degree in this program must first satisfy the regulations for “Required Courses” and “Specific Major Courses” for the master’s program.
2) Students must complete the Graduate Thesis Research courses for two semesters before completing the coursework for the doctoral program. The credits from these courses may be accounted for the required credits for graduation with the approval of the student’s advisor.
3) Students must take other courses after discussions with their advisor and the head of the program.
4) Students must publish at least one paper in a domestic KCI-level academic journal during the doctoral program.
B. Art Theory Education
1) Students who have not completed the coursework for the master’s degree in this program must first satisfy the regulations for “Required Courses” and “Specific Major Courses” for the master’s program. Students can be partially exempted from the courses only in exceptional circumstances with the approval of their advisor and the head of the program.

Thesis Qualification Exam
1. Master’s Program
Students must pass the thesis qualification exam (comprehensive major exam, English exam) before submitting their thesis.
A. Comprehensive Major Exam
1) Eligibility: To take the comprehensive exam, students must be approved by their advisor and the head of the program a semester before taking the exam. The advisor and the head of the program decide on the student’s eligibility based on the student’s list of completed courses and grades.
2) Exam Subjects: Study of Education (30%), Art Education (40%), Art History (Korean and Eastern 15%, Western 15%)
3) Passing Score: 60 or higher
B. English Exam
Students are required take the TEPS test and receive a passing score. The TEPS scores are only valid for two years after the test day. (This regulation does not apply to passing TEPS scores earned when entering the program.)
2. Doctoral Program
Students must pass the thesis qualification exam in two fields and the foreign language exam before submitting their thesis. The exam subjects are as follows, and students can propose their thesis after passing the exam in two fields.
1) Comprehensive Preliminary Exam on Art Education and the Study of Education
2) Exam on Specific Major Related to the Thesis Topic
3) English Exam or the Second Foreign Language Exam
A. Comprehensive Preliminary Exam
1) The exam covers knowledge on art education and the study of education. The scope is determined in consultation with the advisor.
2) The exam consists of a written and spoken exam.
3) The examination committee consists of at least two people and should be formed through consultations between the head of the program and the advisor.
4) Students must take the exam after the end of the first semester of their doctoral program. Students who have earned their master’s degree through this program can take this exam after their admission to the doctoral program is confirmed. Students may retake the exam up to three times if they fail to pass the exam.
B. Exam on Specific Majors
1) The exam subject is a major field that encompasses the thesis subject and is determined in consultation with the advisor but should have the same scope as ① art subject education, ② art theory education, and ③ public art education.
2) The exam consists of a written and spoken exam.
3) The examination committee consists of at least two people, including the student’s advisor.
4) Students must draft a reading list approved by the examination committee. The approved reading list must be submitted to the head of the program at least six months prior to the exam.
5) Students must take this exam after passing the comprehensive preliminary exam on art education. Students may retake the exam up to three times if they fail to pass the exam.
C. English Exam or the Second Foreign Language Exam
1) Students must take the TEPS test and receive a passing score. The TEPS scores are only valid for two years after the test day. (This regulation does not apply to passing TEPS scores earned when entering the program.)
2) Students must receive a passing score in a second foreign language test (on French, German, Japanese, Chinese, or a foreign language recognized by the advisor).
Thesis Evaluation
1. Master’s Program
A. Eligibility for Thesis Submission
Students must satisfy the following conditions to submit their master’s thesis.
1) Students who have satisfied the Regulations for Course Completion (for the Master’s Program).
2) Students who have passed the Thesis Qualification Exam for the master’s degree.
3) Students who have submitted their thesis proposal before the beginning of their third semester.
4) Students who have submitted their draft to their advisor before the semester they wish to graduate.
5) Students who have presented and discussed their thesis in a related academic conference or at the thesis presentation of this program by a designated date (May 31 for the first semester, November 15 for the second semester) during the semester they wish to graduate.
B. Thesis Review Committee
1) The thesis is examined by three professors, including the student’s advisor, and one of the members should be a professor related to the student’s specific major.
2) The thesis review committee is determined by the academic committee for this program, which consists of three members. The head of the program convenes a meeting to determine the committee and notifies the results to the program.
C. Criteria for Thesis Evaluation

2. Doctoral Program
A. Thesis Proposal
Students who have passed all three subjects of the thesis qualification exam must submit their thesis proposals to their advisor.
B. Preliminary Review of Thesis
The advisor, with the approval of the program faculty meeting, convenes a preliminary thesis review committee consisting of three members, including the advisor. This review committee guides the student in writing the thesis and conducts a preliminary review of the thesis.
C. Final Review of Thesis
The thesis that passes the preliminary review by the committee will be reviewed according to the Seoul National University’s doctoral thesis examination procedure. The doctoral degree will be conferred once the thesis passes this procedure.
Academic Advisor
1) The head of the program becomes the temporary advisor for the first semester of students who are expected to enter the program.
2) Students choose and apply for their advisor before the second semester.
Students with Full-time Jobs
1) Students, in principle, cannot have full-time jobs until they complete the coursework for the master’s program.
2) However, students in exceptional circumstances may work full-time after their third semester of the master’s program with the approval of their advisor.
3) The aforementioned rules 1-2 apply to doctoral students who have not completed this program’s master’s program until they complete their fourth semester of the doctoral program.
4) Doctoral students cannot take a leave of absence for more than three consecutive semesters.
